Lafayette was founded in 1821
Lafayette was originally established as Vermilionville in 1821 and incorporated in 1836. The city was renamed in 1884 as Lafayette for General Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette. The city of Lafayette’s nickname is: The Hub City and its motto is: The Heart of Cajun Country. Lafayette is the parish seat of Lafayette Parish.
A local ice cream favorite on the corner of Johnson Street and Jefferson Street is Borden’s Ice Cream Shoppe. This location is actually the last Borden’s retail ice cream shop in the United States. Borden’s Ice Cream Shoppe opened in 1940. This iconic ice cream parlor has served generations of Lafayettiens.
